Subject: Earth Hour 2009
From: Events, Royal Geographical Society-Hong Kong

Dear Members

I am writing to inform you of an important environmental event, which is being supported by the Royal Geographical Society Hong Kong.

At 8.30pm on Saturday, 28 March, an estimated one billion people around the world will turn their lights out for one hour - Earth Hour.  Earth Hour is a global call to action, asking people from all walks of life, to 'Vote Earth' by turning their lights out.

Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007, where 2 million people and 2,100 businesses took part.  In 2008 Earth Hour went global, with over 50 million people in 370 cities around the world turning their lights off to show that they cared about climate change.  2009 will be even bigger, with over 2,000 cities in 82 countries having already committed to being part of Earth Hour.

Nine out of ten of the world's most populated cities are taking part, 65 national capitals will be delivering Earth Hour, and some of the world's most iconic landmarks (including the Sydney Opera House, Big Ben, CN Tower, Eiffel Tower, The Acropolis, Taipei 101, Christ the Redeemer and the Petronas Twin Towers) will all be turning their lights out to support Earth Hour.  Earth Hour support has even been demonstrated in those in the Antarctic, Arctic and by those then climbing the summit of Everest.

In Hong Kong, the support has been unprecedented.  Earth Hour has full government backing, with all 18 District Councils backing the event, as well as all LegCo departments.  All universities and over 100 schools have pledged their support, as well as over 500 companies and more than 1,500 buildings around Hong Kong, including the premises of the Lan Kwai Fung and Wanchai Bar Associations.

We very much hope that all our Members will take part in this important event.

Best rgs

Rupert
